Safety Surfacing

Don't forget your safety surfacing!

75% of all playground injuries are the result of falls, so to keep children as safe as possible, make sure you have proper material beneath your equipment.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends six acceptable options to protect the surface of your play area:

¤ Poured-In-Place Rubber (ADA compliant)
¤ Rubber Tiles (ADA compliant)
¤ Engineered Wood Fiber (ADA compliant)
¤ Shredded Rubber
¤ Pea Gravel
¤ Sand

If you have any questions about safety surfacing, Rex is always available to help you evaluate your needs and how best to keep your play area fun and safe!

Playworld Systems is a member of the International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA) - a member of the IPEMA, a member-driven organization whose mission is to assist in providing safe environments for children's play. In the interest of public playground safety, IPEMA provides a 3rd Party Certification service whereby a designated independent laboratory validates a manufacturer's certification of conformance to the ASTM F1487 (excluding sections 10 and 12.6.1) Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Playground Equipment for Public Use.
The use of the IPEMA Certification Seal in Playworld web site signifies that the manufacturer, Playworld, has received written validation from the independent laboratory that the products) associated with the use of the seal conforms with the requirements of ASTM F1487 (excluding sections 10 and 12.6.1). A list of validated products may be found at IPEMA's web site, www.ipema.org.

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
ASTM is the scientific and technical organization chiefly responsible for developing standards for testing different materials. In 1993 the ASTM published Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specifications for Playground Equipment for Public Use, designated as F1487-93. The standard was reprinted in 1995 and revised in 1998 with the new designation F1487-98. It is this standard that establishes minimum acceptable performance specifications for everything from swings to surfacing.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
CPSC is an independent agency of the U.S. federal government whose purpose is to inform the public of risks associated with consumer products. The CPSC's Handbook for Public Playground Safety is the key reference tool for the playground industry, including specifications for the use of play equipment and recommendations concerning age-related designs and play components.

The Canadian Standards Association (CSA)
The CSA document A Guideline on Children's Play Spaces and Equipment (standard CAN/CSA-Z614-98), published in 1998, contains recommendations on technical requirements and practices applicable to design, manufacture/construction, installation, maintenance, and inspection of children's play equipment for use in public spaces.
